Barong tagalog coat

Black barongs are a modern take on the classic white and ecru. They suit evening weddings, galas, debuts and events where you want to stand apart from a room full of light barongs. How to choose your barong tagalog fabric

Fabric decides how your barong looks, how it feels in the heat, and how much care it needs. All our fabrics are sheer, so you'll see the undershirt through them. That's how a barong is meant to be worn. Here's a plain comparison.

If you're still unsure, a simple rule works for most people. Choose organza for a sharp, formal look. Choose jusi or jusilyn if comfort and easy care matter more. Choose piña or piña jusilyn if it's your own wedding or you want the most traditional piece you can wear.

Barong tagalog size and fit

A barong should fit loosely. It's worn untucked, sits a little longer than a dress shirt, and the fabric has no stretch. That relaxed cut is part of the look, so don't size down to get a slim fit. If anything, a barong that's slightly roomy will look better than one that pulls across the chest.

How to find your size

1. Start with your usual Filipino T-shirt size. If you have a broader, Western build, go one size larger.
2. For a more exact fit, measure your chest, waist and hips in inches, over a light shirt.
3. Add 4 inches to each measurement to allow for ease of movement.

Men's barongs come in Small to 4XL. Barong coats come in Small to 3XL, with custom sizes on request. Boys' barongs come in sizes 0 to 20, and the boys' chart is on the same size chart page.

Custom tailoring

If you fall between sizes or have a build that standard sizes don't suit, we offer custom tailoring for an additional $20. You enter your exact measurements when you order. Most customers do well with a standard size, so we suggest checking the chart first. For coats and wedding packages, email us your sizes and we'll confirm them with you before we start.

What to wear with a barong tagalog

Because the barong is sheer, what you wear under it matters as much as the barong itself. Get the layers right and the whole outfit looks finished.

The undershirt

The traditional undershirt is the camisa de chino, a plain, collarless cotton shirt. It stops the barong from clinging, absorbs sweat and gives the sheer fabric a clean, even background. We make it in white and black, in long and short sleeves. Choose the long-sleeved camisa de chino under a long-sleeve barong, and the short-sleeved camisa de chino under a short-sleeve barong. A black camisa de chino under a light barong creates a strong contrast for evening events.

Trousers and shoes

Black trousers are the safe, traditional choice and suit every barong. Dark grey or navy also work well. Keep the cut plain and tailored, without pleats or cargo pockets. For shoes, wear polished black leather dress shoes for weddings and formal events. Brown leather works for daytime or more relaxed gatherings.

Adding a coat

For a groom or a very formal event, wear a barong coat over your barong or camisa de chino. Keep the barong underneath simpler so the two layers don't compete.

We accept exchanges within 14 days of delivery if the item is unworn, unwashed and still has its tags. Exchanges carry a restocking fee and a delivery charge, and we don't offer refunds unless we made an error, such as sending the wrong item or size. How to care for your barong tagalog

Barong fabrics are fine and light, so a little care keeps yours looking new for years.

• Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, or have it dry cleaned. Piña and coats are best dry cleaned.
• Don't wring or twist the fabric. Press the water out gently and hang it to dry in the shade.
• Iron on low heat with a pressing cloth between the iron and the embroidery.
• Store it on a wide hanger in a breathable garment bag, away from direct sunlight.

A short history of the barong tagalog

Filipino men wore loose, light upper garments long before the Spanish arrived. Over the colonial period, that shirt took on the sheer fabrics, front opening and chest embroidery we know today. A common story says that colonial rules made Filipino men wear their shirts untucked and in sheer cloth. Historians debate how true that is, but the untucked style stayed.

In the 20th century the barong became a symbol of national identity. President Ramon Magsaysay wore one at his inauguration in 1953, and Filipino leaders have worn it at official events ever since.
